Environment & Natural Resource Management

As population growth and climate change mount pressure on scarce resources, we help communities govern land, water and forests sustainably — protecting the resources that livelihoods depend on.

The Challenge

Precious resources are diminishing fast

Natural resource management has drawn increasing attention across Africa in response to crises in energy, food and water. As demand grows, watersheds and irrigated land deteriorate, while desertification, deforestation, overgrazing and soil erosion accelerate.

Effective governance has always mattered — but it is increasingly challenging amid changing climate, livelihoods and market pressures. Our programs under Environment & Natural Resources target land management, quality water, afforestation, agricultural development, fisheries, coastal and marine management, and human–wildlife conflict.

What We Manage

Four fronts of environmental stewardship

From primary forests to the coastline, our programmes keep ecosystems — and the people who rely on them — resilient.

Forest Management

We build sustainable landscapes, protect primary forests and advance the rights of forest communities — helping them implement effective land-use policies and meet national and international commitments.

Climate Change

The defining issue of our time. We help communities adapt to impacts already underway, such as sea-level rise, while working to mitigate further change by reducing emissions and enhancing carbon storage.

Marine & Coastal Management

Coastal zones face over-exploitation, habitat loss and invasive species. We assess marine ecosystems, build local management networks and promote regional, multi-stakeholder dialogue.

Human–Wildlife Conflict

As protected wildlife populations recover, conflict with people rises. Our sustainable wildlife management sustains species and habitat over time while respecting the socio-economic needs of communities.

In Focus · Climate Change

Acting on two fronts

From shifting weather that threatens food production to rising seas that raise flood risk, climate impacts are global in scope and unprecedented in scale. Without action today, adapting tomorrow will be far more difficult and costly.

  • 01
    Adaptation

Helping communities adapt to effects already happening and expected to accelerate, such as sea-level rise.

  • 02
    Mitigation

Preventing further climate change by reducing emissions and enhancing carbon storage.

Our Approach

Managing resources where they matter most — in rural landscapes

CA's programmes and projects under Environment & Natural Resources span the systems that sustain communities and biodiversity alike.

Land & Water

Sound land management and safeguarding water quality for people and ecosystems.

Afforestation

Restoring tree cover and building sustainable, productive landscapes.

Fisheries & Coastal

Protecting marine and coastal ecosystems through assessment and collaboration.

Human–Wildlife

Balancing recovering wildlife populations with community wellbeing.
