For nearly three decades, Conservation Alliance International has connected scientific knowledge, community leadership and practical action to protect nature while improving human well-being.
01
From Conservation International to Conservation Alliance
Our story began in 1997, when Conservation International established its programme in Ghana. In 2008, following a new regional arrangement and the closure of Conservation International's activities in the country, the programme was reconstituted as Conservation Alliance International (CA). The new organization retained deep local experience while gaining the independence to build an African-led approach to conservation.
Today, CA is a not-for-profit, non-governmental natural resource management organization working where biodiversity, livelihoods and sustainable development meet. Our multidisciplinary orientation provides a strong platform for addressing natural resource management challenges throughout the Upper Guinea Hotspot.
02
Growing with the communities we serve
From an early Ghana programme, Conservation Alliance has grown to work with more than one million people living in over 200 communities across the Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Ashanti, Central, Western and Greater Accra Regions. Field offices bring technical support closer to farmers, traditional leaders, women, young people and other community partners.
Our work combines biodiversity conservation with sustainable cocoa, climate-smart agriculture, landscape restoration, environmental education, research and policy advocacy. This people-centred model recognizes that lasting conservation succeeds when communities have the knowledge, opportunity and authority to steward the natural resources around them.
03
National leadership, global collaboration
CA is an active member of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative in Japan, the African Forest Forum and Ghana's Cocoa & Forests Initiative. We chair the National Biodiversity Offset Committee and are a ranking member of both the National Biosafety Committee and the National Biodiversity Steering Committee.
These roles allow lessons from farms, forests and communities to inform national decisionsβand help global conservation commitments become meaningful action on the ground.
04
Built for accountable, long-term impact
Our governance structure consists of a seven-member Board of Directors and a secretary, five Country Directors and a multidisciplinary team of technical staff. A dedicated finance and administration department supports responsible resource use and strong financial controls. CA's accounts are audited annually by TGS PenielStephens, with audit reports presented to the Board for review and decision.
Across every programme, our values remain constant: integrity, trust, respect, creativity, courage, honest teamwork and a determination to achieve measurable results for people and nature.
