Thematic Area

Agriculture & Rural Development

Agriculture provides income, employment and food β€” and the raw materials that power industry. We help build a sustainable path that lifts rural livelihoods without jeopardising the natural resources future generations will need.

Why It Matters

Prosperity that doesn't cost the land

Creating a sustainable agricultural path means improving quality of life in rural areas, ensuring enough food for present and future generations, and generating sufficient income for farmers.

It also means maintaining productive capacity for the future and increasing productivity without damaging the environment β€” while respecting local knowledge and local management of natural resources.

What We Do

Three pillars of rural prosperity

Practical programmes that raise incomes and productivity while restoring the landscapes farming depends on.

Sustainable Cocoa Production

We tackle barriers to sustainable cocoa at three levels β€” working with traders, promoting biodiversity-conserving certification, and supporting farmers to adopt best practices that connect forest fragments and lift productivity.

Community Resource Management Areas

CREMA helps communities become organised and thoughtful about how natural resources are used β€” catalysing sound decision-making and giving organisations and government a structure to work through.

Community-ledGovernance

PAVE Irrigation

A water-conservation technology that captures excess rainfall and flood water, filters it and stores it in the aquifer for dry-season cropping β€” enabling at least two cropping seasons and up to 70% higher land productivity.

Change at every level of the chain

To scale sustainable cocoa, the programme works to remove barriers at three connected levels β€” from global markets down to the individual farm.

  • 01
    Market level

Working with cocoa traders to back farmers adopting sustainable practices, linking best management to productivity.

  • 02
    National level

Promoting certification models that reward biodiversity-conserving, productive agroforestry systems.

  • 03
    Local level

Supporting farmers to adopt practices that enhance farm ecology and reconnect forest fragments while raising yields.

Our Approach

Productivity today, without borrowing from tomorrow

Our programmes and projects under Agriculture and Rural Development are aimed at sustainable cocoa production, community resource management areas, PAVE irrigation and fisheries development.

01

Sustainable Cocoa

Agroforestry systems that conserve biodiversity and raise farm incomes.

02

CREMA

Community-led governance of shared natural resources.

03

PAVE Irrigation

Turning floodwater into dry-season productivity.

04

Fisheries Development

Strengthening livelihoods along the water's edge.
