PESTICIDE ACTION PROGRAM OF CA

The Pesticide Action Program (PAP) of CA is to strengthen the role of civil society organizations in multi-stakeholder partnerships contribute to the development and implementation of new and innovative strategies to enhance the socioecological health of the cocoa growing landscapes. The four main areas of focus include

  1. Political Economy Analysis (PEA) of Pesticide Management in Ghana
  • Gives overview of the structures, stakeholders and institutions involved in pesticide management in Ghana.
  • Basis for review of the Chemical Control Act 249, 1994.
  • Digital innovation for detecting approved and unapproved pesticides.
  1. Multi-Stakeholder Platform on Pesticides
  • Strengthening of Highly Hazardous Pesticide (HHP) Working Group, Ghana.
  • Involves all relevant state and non state actors in the pesticide value chain.
  • Nationwide sensitization undertaken with involvement of communities, traditional authorities and the district assemblies.
  • National Biodiversity Committee plays a critical role.
  1. Local Community Participation
  • Critical mass for advocacy and capacity building on pesticides and improving ecological health of production landscapes.
  • Focus on elimination of the use of unapproved pesticides.
  • Promotion of IPM through farmer-led field demonstration plots.
  • Avenue to deepen local discussion and dialogue on EU Due Diligence regulations on living income, human rights and deforestation within the commodity value chain.
  1. Research and Knowledge Sharing
  • Research and publication on pesticide issues in reputable and trade journals.
  • Knowledge generation of pesticide use within the agricultural production landscapes.
  • Networking and partnership building on pesticide with both local and foreign actors.
  • Information generation on pesticide use among the coastal communities of Ghana.
  • Political Economy Analysis (PEA) of Pesticide Management within West Africa.
