Developing in a sustainable way is impossible without Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) estimates that almost 800,000 children under 5 die from sanitation related diseases such diarrhea each year. Furthermore, 88 percent of diarrhea is attributed to unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.
Conservation Alliance (CA) in its quest to empower communities for development is implementing WASH based interventions in both rural and urban communities. In the rural areas, CA utilizes the Community Lead Total Sanitation Model (CLTS) to trigger and empower communities to undertake innovative actions to address their sanitation challenges.
This includes the construction of gender sensitize latrine systems, which is suitable for both sexes. These local communities are also empowered on Rain water harvesting and treatment systems, which enhances access to clean water.
In addition, CA is enhancing WASH in the urban settings through the promotion and adoption of anaerobic treatments systems for sewage management. CA believes the current sewage disposal system poses a threat to both human and animal life. Thus, the conversion of sewage into biogas will enhance community sanitation, and also increase access to clean energy systems.
