STRENGTHENING TRACEABILITY ACCOUNTABILITY AND RESILIENCE (STAR) OF FARMER GROUPS
Introduction:
The Strengthening Traceability Accountability and Resilience (STAR) project is a collaborative project, funded by the Rainforest Alliance’s Africa Cocoa Fund (ACF). The STAR project is aimed at improving sustainable cocoa production in Ghana in the Kakum enclave of the Central Region of Ghana. The project is targeted at promoting Integrated Management Systems (IMS) and traceability, climate adaptation, farm geodata collection, Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), and Skills for Marketing and Rural Transformation (SMART) strategies among lead cocoa farmers.
Date of Implementation – 2023 -2024
Implementation Site – Kakum Conservation Area
Outcome:
A final assessment showed that the 30 trained farmers can now independently map their farms, with 75% maintaining accurate records, 93% adopting improved practices, achieving a 70% reduction in chemical use, and realizing a 60% increase in yield.
Conclusion:
The project delivered strong results, achieving a substantial increase in traceable cocoa farms owned by farmer group members, with all farms fully mapped and integrated into a digital platform
