The Secure Water Project seeks to enhance the capacities of farmers within selected districts in Northern Ghana to undertake dual season (particularly in the dry season farming). Access to water for most farmers within Northern Ghana is a major challenge, and thus these farmers are limited to a single season cropping. This situation is negatively impacting food security, incomes and nutrition of most farming households in Northern Ghana. In view of this challenge, Conservation Alliance (CA) in partnership with International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks to promote the adoption of PAVE Irrigation Technology and Bhungroo among smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana. These technologies are water conservation systems that captures flood water for dry season farming. Even though these technologies are similar, PAVE is highly suitable for areas with relatively higher floods.

The main objectives of the Secure Water Project are;

• Identify sites for installation within the selected districts
• Design and Install proposed technologies in concert with appropriate water lifting and distribution systems
• Assess and establish the technical and economic feasibilities
• Build capacities of farmers and other stakeholders on the use of technologies.

The Secure Water Project is funded by the USAID’s (Feed the Future) Agriculture Technology Transfer Project being implemented by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC). Again, the Secure Water Project forms part of CA’s Northern Ghana program.
