SBSTTA-27 PANAMA 2025
The SBSTTA-27 was a pivotal global policy instrument under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) that provides scientific, technical and technological guidance to support the implementation of the Kunming‑Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
The meeting focused on five core areas:
(i) the global review of collective progress towards the KMGBF;
(ii) strengthening the interface between science and policy via the Intergovernmental Science‑Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES);
(iii) biodiversity-climate-health interlinkages;
(iv) risk assessment, invasive alien species and related emerging threats; and
(v) updating national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs).
Key outcomes included the adoption of an annotated outline for the forthcoming global report on collective progress; the reaffirmation of the need for inclusive governance with full participation of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, women and youth; and the identification of major impediments such as inadequate finance, capacity and data systems. Conservation Alliance International’s (CAI), participation in SBSTTA-27 directly advances our mission of sustainable, science-based natural resource management, women’s empowerment and equitable governance of ecosystems.
