BHUNGROO PROJECT
The Bhungroo Irrigation Technology (BIT) — derived from the Gujarati word “Bhungroo,” meaning “straw” is an innovative climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness technology developed by Indian partners and promoted by Conservation Alliance International across Africa.
In Ghana, Bhungroo has been identified as a transformative solution for farmers in the three Northern Regions, Afram Plains, and the Accra Plains, where recurrent flooding and drought threaten food security and livelihoods. Its design and installation are tailored to the specific water, soil, and environmental conditions of each site, using locally available materials to ensure sustainability and scalability.
Beyond Ghana, Conservation Alliance International is also piloting Bhungroo in Sierra Leone and Liberia, where field activities are exploring its potential to rehabilitate swamps degraded by small-scale mining.
The project has attracted strong support and interest from major development partners including the World Bank, USAID, the Dutch Government, and the Government of Ghana as well as from private sector actors and local farming communities, who view Bhungroo as a life-changing innovation for sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in Africa.
Donor Partners: World Bank, USAID, the Dutch Government, and the Government of Ghana (Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Finance)
